A hallmark of Austin is Lady Bird Lake, named after Texan and former first lady Lady Bird Johnson. Lady Bird Lake is part of the Colorado River and is a sought-after place to canoe, kayak and use stand-up paddleboards. Next to the lake is the 10-mile Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail.

Just south of Lady Bird Lake, Austin’s 351-acre Zilker Metropolitan Park is home to the natural spring water Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Botanical Gardens, Austin Nature and Science Center, and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum.

The 641-acre McKinney Falls State Park, located 10 miles southeast of downtown, is another popular feature of Austin.. This park features camping, hiking, mountain biking and swimming in Onion Creek.  For sunset views, people gravitate to Mount Bonnell, a high point at 781 feet along Lake Austin located in Covert Park. The overlook is accessed by a 102-step staircase.

Downtown’s Sixth Street Entertainment District attracts college students and out-of-towners. Sixth Street is also home to the iconic The Driskill hotel, established in 1886.

SoCo, or South Congress, is south of downtown/Lady Bird Lake. This all-day entertainment area is home to dining, shopping and iconic murals, like the “I Love You So Much” and “Willie for President.”.  Rainey Street is west of Interstate 35 that bisects Austin north to south. Old bungalows now house bars and eateries, and live music is common most days of the week.  And of course, Austin hosts two headlining festivals each year. Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Park. South by Southwest, also known as SXSW, is actually two festivals in one. This part-technology festival, part-music festival takes place at more than 50 venues across Austin.
